The Ohio High School Athletic Association continues to present the “Courageous Student” award to one deserving individual from a member high school. The guidelines for determining the recipient are: 1) A student who either currently has, or who has overcome, a serious illness, injury, or disability. 2) A student who has overcome great adversity in a positive way. 3) A student who has gone far beyond normal in assisting a fellow student, family member or friend. 4) Other extraordinary situations, where a student has displayed tremendous courage against overwhelming odds. This award is intended to bring credit to a very special student who has been involved in, or supportive of, the interscholastic athletic program, and who deserves recognition for courage.
Maria Evans is the 2018 recipient of the OHSAA Courageous Athlete Award. Maria earned two varsity letters in field hockey and two in lacrosse over the course of four years at Bishop Hartley. Maria has overcome multiple knee injuries and surgeries all while maintaining her positive attitude and support of field hockey and lacrosse. Beginning her freshman season Maria demonstrated the mindset and skill level to be a top player in the state. More importantly, she is a role model and leader for Hartley. Whether playing in a game, practice, or rehabbing from an injury Maria was committed to the team and their goals. Her ability to focus under adversity is what truly makes her a champion student-athlete
Congratulations to our 2018 OHSAA Courageous Athlete Recipient, Maria Evans.
