Senior Casey King Receives Wendy’s Heisman Award

Senior Casey King was recently recognized as the Bishop Hartley winner of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. This places her among the top student athletes in the country.

In addition, during winter break, Casey attended US Deaf Women’s National Team Camp in Austin Texas.  Aside from ‘cold’ conditions (daytime highs 60, 43, 35, 26), the camp was an amazing experience for the attendees.  Casey worked with Washington Huskies Assistant coach, Amy Griffith, and USWNT Legend, Joy Fawcett as well as US Women’s U23 and Illinois Head Coach Janet Rayfield and Abbey Smith from the Boston Breakers.

The person Casey remembered most was a little girl named Malia, a 9 year old neuroblastoma (cancer) survivor.  Casey lost a dear classmate and friend who died when he was 7 years old to the same form of cancer.  Casey took extra time to welcome Malia and wrote to her after camp. She has heard from Malia’s family several times since, thanking her for the time she spent with their daughter.

The camp was an incredible experience for Casey at  many levels. It was a chance to play and learn at a very high level while, at the same time, being reminded that there are things in life more important.
