Mary Geist Service Award

February 4, 2010

The Mary Geist Service Award is presented annually during Catholic Schools Week to individuals who have exhibited outstanding volunteer service to Bishop Hartley High School.

This year, Bishop Hartley is proud to award this distinction to three generous individuals, Mr. Craig Corcoran, (left) father of current senior Cara Corcoran ('10), and Tricia and  Greg Canfield, (right) parents of current senior Christopher Canfield ('10).  They are shown here with Mrs. Judith Manley (second to left), Bishop Hartley Drama Department, who nominated the recipients for their outstanding service to Bishop Hartley.

CRAIG CORCORAN
Craig A. Corcoran is a 1980 graduate of Bishop Hartley. He attended Columbus Technical Institute (CTI) and Coastal Carolina Community College. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served from 1984 until 1990. He is a three time Honorably Discharged Marine Veteran. Following his discharge, he was employed with Corna & DiCesare and Lincoln Construction Company as a carpenter and superintendent. He is currently employed as an engineer at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
Mr. Corcoran began his involvement with Bishop Hartley's Drama Department Club when his daughter Caitlin, a 2008 Hartley graduate, began as a freshman in 2004. He has designed and built the sets for the last 16 plays over the last six years. He has enjoyed being a part of all of the drama productions and working with all the students.
Craig and his wife Cynthia, a 1982 Hartley graduate and now a Registered Nurse at Nationwide Children's Hospital, were married in 1984 and have been married for 25 years.  They have three children: Shaun, Caitlin, and Cara. Cara will be graduating this year, a member of the Bishop Hartley Class of 2010.
TRICIA & GREG CANFIELD
Greg and Tricia Canfield have been married for 22 years. Greg is a 1981 graduate of Bishop Hartley High School and the Columbus College of Art and Design. He is proud to say that he played football under the direction of the late, great Coach Jack Ryan.

Tricia graduated from Ursuline College, with a bachelor’s degree in Business and Fashion Design. She has most recently completed her Kindergarten through Third Grade teaching licensure from Notre Dame College in Cleveland.

Both Greg and Tricia feel so fortunate that their son, Christopher, has shared his High School years with them by encouraging them to be a part of his Bishop Hartley experience. They began helping with the Theater department during the production of Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. Greg helped design the set and Tricia assisted in creating some of the costumes. The following autumn, they got serious and began to work, full speed ahead on helping to, visually, “create” the shows. Aida was a “labor of love” for both of them, and to watch Christopher in one of the lead roles, only bolstered their excitement. Greg worked every weekend from Christmas through opening night, while Tricia designed and sewed 87 of the costumes in the show.

They are humbled to receive the Mary Geist Service award for something that they have felt so blessed and grateful to be a part of. “Our experience working with so many different students and staff members has been phenomenal. We have been lucky to see the “good” in everyone around us by seeing their willingness to work hard to create something beautiful.”
