From the Desk of Principal Winters
Dear Bishop Hartley Parents and Students:
What does this season of Lent mean to your family? Is it a time for "giving up" and "going without" or does it take on a different aspect? Perhaps we should think of it as a time for giving and forgiving.
Jesus gave us the most wonderful gift - the gift of Himself. What can we give? We can give our time to someone who may be lonely or ill. We can give our service to our community. We can give material help to those who are in need. We can give praise and thanks to God for His loving care.
When Jesus, dying on the cross, said, "Forgive them, Father," he gave us and extraordinary example to follow. We need to forgive those who are unkind or unfriendly to us. We need to keep love rather than resentment in our hearts. We need to return good for evil and we need to accept one another as Christ has accepted us.
Our young people learn more from what we do than from what we say. As we give and forgive, we will be modeling for them the true meaning of life in God's service, not just for Lent, but for all the days ahead.
A traditional pillar of Lenten observance is almsgiving and the Bishop Hartley community is once again collecting goods for the Brookwood Presbyterian Church Food Pantry during the weeks of March 4-15th. In addition, we will be participating in Operation Rice Bowl. Both of these endeavors are a sign of our care for those in need and an expression of our gratitude for all that God has given us.
During the next several weeks of Lent we will continue with the following services and Lenten customs:
- Every Friday at 7:10 am - Morning Mass in the St. James Chapel
- March 27 at 10:05 am - All School Service; Way of the Cross
At this time and in no particular order, I'd like to draw attention to some outstanding accomplishments and thank these individuals and teams for representing Bishop Hartley with such dedication and spirit:
Girls Basketball For the first time since 2001, the Girls Basketball team earned the Division II District Championship Title. Congratulations, ladies!
Swimming Ronnie Bolden (left): State Runner-Up in 50 Freestyle & 3rd Place in 100 Butterfly. Andrea Cottrell (right): 3rd Place in 100 Breaststroke & 4th Place in 200 Individual Medley. Also, the medley relay of Jonathan Kluczynski, Patrick Lawrence, Ronnie Bolden, and Vince Canini moved up one place from where they were seeded (24th to 23rd).
Wrestling Congratulations to Kristopher Hill and Grant Rathburn as they competed in the DIII State Tournament at the beginning of March. Grant won his opening match and Kristopher wrestled all the way to a 6th Place finish. Both of these young men capped off a wonderful season for the wrestling team as a whole!
Drama Production Manager Jonathan Collura and the cast and crew of CATS put on a phenomenal musical performance. Everyone involved in the production should be very proud. Congratulations on a fantastic show!
National Merit Scholarship Finalists Congratulations to this year's National Merit finalists: Hannah Hostetler, Clare Kossler, Dominic Pfister, and Thomas Zaino. Congratulations to this year's National Achievement Finalist, Justine Franklin. Finally, congratulations to this year's Commended Students: Dory Cassidy, Nicholas Evers, Lydia Fyie, and Tiffany Wolf.
On behalf of everyone at Bishop Hartley, we wish you a meaningful Lent, a blessed Easter, and a wonderful spring.
