BISHOP HARTLEY TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT
When Bishop Hartley became the first school in the country to offer tablet PCs 24/7 to an entire class of students, they embarked on an educational adventure that has continued to receive national attention and accolades. However, technology is ever-changing and constantly improving, thus we have implemented a new technological innovation into our curriculum; the iPad2. The iPad2 computers replace a vast supply of educational tools: notepaper, assignment books, graphing calculators, pencils & pens, notebooks, and handouts. Textbooks are digitized to reduce the 30 pound book bag to a 1 pound iPad2. The iPad2 has an innovative and intuitive interface that accepts touch, voice, and keyboard input. The iPad device stores notes, textbooks, and class documents on which students can provide verbal or written annotation. Students no longer have to worry about losing homework, forgetting a textbook, running out of paper, sharpening a pencil, or trying to find time to get to the computer lab. It’s all on their iPad2!
The educational experience for all students has been redefined with wireless connectivity throughout the school, iPad2’s for every student (beginning 2013-14), and computers with specially designed software in various classrooms. Every classroom has interactive Smartboards and projectors. The media-rich lecture hall is designed for innovative educational options and has been utilized by our students and individuals from around the world.
The technology infrastructure is also enhanced by distance learning hardware as well as innovative software applications that are enhancing the classroom experience. Several national companies including Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Dyknow, Smart Technologies and TechSmith are working with Hartley students and teachers in their research and development of new technologies and strategies.
