#HartleyFest—A Back To School Kick-Off for Hartley families
#HartleyFest—A Back To School Kick-Off for Hartley Families
On Wednesday, August 13, the House Parent Organization will host Hartley's first #HartleyFest at Jack Ryan Field. This event is for all students and their parents and siblings. We will kick off the 2014-2015 school year with refreshments, snacks, and some friendly competition. This is a great opportunity for all members of our Hartley community to get to know each other better. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and conclude by 8 p.m. More information can be found HERE. We would greatly appreciate you indicating whether you will attend so that we can have a more accurate count for food and drink purposes. Go HERE to RSVP and/or to sign up to volunteer if interested. Don't worry if you forget to RSVP, though - we want you there no matter what!
Changes to the Summer Herald & Mailing
Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, all school newsletters will be distributed electronically. The summer mailing, which in years past has included a printed Herald and a variety of flyers and handouts, will be delivered via e-mail and available on our website. This process is the same used for all other newsletters throughout the year. Families can expect to receive the summer Herald electronically by August 1, 2014.
It is critical you have signed up to receive e-mail from our school. Without a current e-mail on file, you will not receive the e-mail for the summer Herald which contains all the back-to-school information you need. If you have not already done so, click HERE to register your e-mail address. PLEASE NOTE: This is a two-step process. Once you submit your information, you will receive an e-mail confirmation. Follow the instructions in the e-mail to complete the registration process. If you do not confirm your registration, you will not be added to the system.
Likewise, if you registered your e-mail in the past, we strongly recommend you review your information to ensure it is still current. It is very easy for e-mail addresses to become outdated with employment and Internet provider changes. Click HERE to review your information. If you do not have an e-mail account, please contact us and we will make individual arrangements with you.
Please keep in mind all newsletters are archived on our website. You will be able to repeatedly access the summer Herald from our website. Likewise, as you can do now with all of our newsletters, the summer Herald can be printed from our website if you prefer to have a paper copy as well.
We are excited about the change and believe it will prove to be beneficial to families. The electronic summer Herald will enable us to provide you with the most up-to-date information and be accessible with computers, iPads and tablets, and smart phones. At work, at home, and everywhere on the go, all you will need is an Internet connection to have the information at your fingertips.

Heart Screenings for BHHS Student Athletes
As many of you already know, we here at Bishop Hartley High School are partnering again with mCORE, a company that provides mobile heart screenings for high school students. mCORE will be on campus providing these screenings in an attempt to catch underlying heart defects that can lead to Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the leading cause of death in young athletes. Do not miss the chance to take advantage of these convenient and cost effective tests. As of today, there are only 14 available appointments left. Click HERE to learn more on SCA and mCORE.
- Date: Thursday, August 14th
- Time: 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
- Location: Nurses Office
- Screening for: Risk of life-threatening cardiac conditions.
- Time Requirement: Approximately 12-15 minutes per athlete.
- Each athlete will be given an EKG and Echo screening. These tests typically cost more than $2000 in a clinical setting.

2014 Summer Reading List
What does your student need to read this summer to prepare for school year 2014-15?
English: All students will be required to read from the required summer reading list and be prepared for an assessment within the first week or two of school. The list is available HERE as well as on the English Department webpage to download summer reading assignments for all grades and classes, freshmen through seniors. Students may obtain the books through libraries, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Half Price Books. They should have access to the books during the first few weeks of school.
AP English Literature & Composition: The list of required reading and associated assignments for AP 12 English can be found HERE as well as on the English Department webpage. A number of assignments need to be completed over the summer and a journal will be due on the first day of school so be sure to review this document closely.
AP History: The list of required reading can be found HERE as well as on the Social Studies Department webpage. Students are required to have two standard composition notebooks and the AP US History test prep book and answer key. Purchasing information for the book is available on the reading list noted above as well as the department webpage.
